Homo Say What? Robert Watson is hilarious
11 Jan 2023
Robert Watson is a youthful-looking 41-year-old gay comedian in Toronto. On January 27th he will be releasing his debut stand-up album Homo Say What?, a hilarious 30-minute set recorded at The Rivoli that culminates with the story of how he lost his virginity to a Cher impersonator. Along the way are witty observations about growing up Mormon, arguing with Debra Messing, and being a former visible minority.
“I worked retail selling fragrances but the pandemic made me realize how it sucked the life out of me,” he told me via Zoom, anxious to move on and make stand-up his main source of income. As a result, he’s a busy guy. He runs Gay A.F., a collective of queer comedians who do live shows and tours. They showcased at Just for Laughs last summer. He also created, wrote and produced a web series called A Gay Victorian Affair, directed by his husband Andrew Lamb. A Gay Victorian Affair is really something, the story of a snobby British couple and their various sex partners. The production values are amazing. It looks like Downton Abbey, and there’s even a nude scene. “We needed something sexy,” Watson told me. “So I thought, Who won’t sue? Probably the best idea is that I do the nude scene myself.”
As for Homo Say What?, there’s lots of laughs. I enjoyed the bit about how gay people are exhausting, and the stuff about his Mormon upbringing and his mother. “You can be gay, and you can be Mormon, but not at the same time,” he told me. One thing’s for sure - he can always be funny.
