Gun Violence: Rising Faster Than Toronto Condos 27 Feb 2019.
Last Friday, Toronto Members of Parliament from Trudeau's own government joined families of the victims of the Danforth Shooting to call upon the Prime Minister to ban handguns and assault rifles and to strengthen gun control laws.
Canada is one of only a few nations in the world to have moved backwards with our gun reform. We’ve seen a staggering rise in gun violence and shooting deaths in the last five years. The federal government is currently considering a national ban on handguns and is expected to make a decision soon.
It’s time to make our voices heard and convince our government to do the right thing. This is our moment to trigger change to a country without gun violence. Speak out and sign this petition for a national handgun and military assault weapon ban.
This campaign, Trigger Change is organized by the Coalition for Gun Control and is aiming to get 100,000 signatures. At the time of writing they are at 20,000 so there’s still more to do to trigger the change. Canada has long been known as a peaceful country, however that image has been steadily shifting as we become immune to the news of the latest fatality. Consider these recent stats from the Coalition for Gun Control:
-Canada is one of the few developed countries loosening its gun laws.
-Restricted and prohibited weapons in Canada have doubled in just ten years.
-There are now nearly 1 million legally owned handguns in Canada.
-Firearm-related crime has increased 42% between 2013 and 2017.
-Military assault weapons such as the AR-15 used in the Parkland Florida massacre are sold to civilians in Canada.
