"You're so gorgeous, you look like Charlize Theron," I gush over the phone to drag superstar Courtney Act.
"I will take that," she replies graciously. And why not? She really is gorgeous. And now, Courtney will be joining Willam Belli and Alaska Thunderfuck as The AAA Girls, a hot new touring show they bring to Toronto on Friday, October. 20. What will it be like? Just ask Courtney.
"Rehearsals started yesterday, in Burbank with the Square Division, an amazing director team who are currently directing Katy Perry's world tour while also doing our show. Their work blew all of us away at the rehearsal - giant props, tinsel curtains, and these giant eight foot tall letter 'A's that wheel around that we climb all over and they change colours. Fabulous props!"
Courtney is Australian, with a charming accent. She started performing at a very young age. "I probably considered myself a childhood star but nobody else did." She would do pantomimes and other theatre shows, then moved to Sydney and got bitten by the drag bug. Her name, when pronounced with an Aussie accent, sounds like "caught in the act." She competed on Australian Idol, then became a finalist on Ru Paul's Drag Race. Since then, Courtney has toured the world, doing shows in Toronto for World Pride and other events. "I'm in Toronto a lot, and there is always such a brilliant audience. Maybe as an Australian I notice it more, but I feel this wave of Commonwealth camaraderie coming back at me."
Like a lot of Ru Paul's drag children, Courtney has pursued a recording career. She has a lovely voice and has recorded such clever songs as "Mean Gays" and "Ugly." But don't expect the show to just be a bunch of singing. "It's quite different from previous Drag Race tours which tend to be variety shows. In our show, the three of us are together on stage the whole time, singing originals and parodies and doing choreography together. All three of us have a similar style, but approach it from different angles. Willam is the shock queen, I'm the pop queen and Alaska is an alien goddess. We come together to create a fascinating blend, like a girl group."
Girl group? Like The Supremes, The Runaways, The Spice Girls, The Go-Go's? Most likely a melange of all four. With more fabulous hair.
