Like most of you, I am flummoxed by what is happening at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.
A few years ago, the company’s founder, Sky Gilbert, severed ties with the company, driven out by woke nonsense. What sort of organization dumps their founder? Even if it was justified, and it wasn’t, the optics look terrible. Still, the company carried on. Buddies was always our theatre, and it meant something to our community.
In recent years, I went to Buddies usually because of Patricia Wilson, who ran the bar in Tallulah’s Cabaret. The trans legend/rockstar/nicest person in the gaybourhood made her bar the coolest place in town. But now, according to a January 27th Facebook post, she and long-time managing director Shawn Daudlin “have both mutually agreed with Buddies in Bad Times Theatre to be terminated.” Mutual?
Buddies is the theatre company that committed suicide. A recent article in the Toronto Star stated that the entire board of directors of Buddies has resigned. So who’s running the ship? Losing Patricia is a huge mistake, and we all know it. True, she was poised to retire anyway, but you don’t dump a legend. The powers-that-be at Buddies have done it twice, which is impressive if it also wasn’t so stupid.
So is this the end? Will we soon see a Development Proposal sign posted outside the building?
A phoenix may yet rise from the ashes, but for my generation, the damage has been done.
Thanks for nothing.
