Cuarenta y Nueve is a thoughtful art book by Joie Lamer, created in memory of the Pulse massacre that took place in Orlando back in June of 2016. It's a heart-warming collection of community members coming together to offer poetry, images and sometimes thought-provoking prose in an effort to comfort those impacted, and perhaps heal themselves in the process. As Joie so eloquently highlights that the book is also dedicated to those who, "cried for our community following the news. We not only felt your dismay, but too your love and acceptance through your tears."
Highlights include; DJ and drag reformer Alphonso King Jr's piece entitled Perfectly Flawed is a rhythmic testament to what it means to be human, Lorenzo's heart-wrenching work, "Queer Soul Harmony" which takes us right into the heart and head of a Pulse victim as does Montreal born Melinda's work "The Music Will Live On". With over 100 pages of artist works, this collection is perfect example of communities healing themselves. You can catch Joie Lamar along with other artists in the book at their upcoming book launch this February. Proceeds from the book donated to Pride School Atlanta and GLAAD.
