Gays Against Guns to Stage Protest as the "Human Beings" - Raymond Helkio - MyGayToronto
Gays Against Guns to Stage Protest as the "Human Beings" 9 April 2018.
What's a Human Being? The "Human Beings" are people dressed in all-white who carry a placards emblazoned with personal details about someone who died from gun violence. Each Human Being represents that person, veiled in silence, for the duration of the action. It's a powerful and moving way to remember the victims of gun violence, and a meaningful way to participate in creating change.
Gays Against Guns (GAG) provides the veils, placards and hats, you're responsible for dressing in white. Check out the upcoming action dates below or to volunteer send an email.
VIDEO SHOOT Saturday April 14
A short video about GAG that's being filmed during the daytime in Bushwick in collaboration with a group called Damn Joan. We're asking that you dress particularly formally for this one, and you don't have to worry about layering because the recording will be done inside a studio which will be climate controlled. We do not need protesters for this shoot, only Human Beings. More info.
SCHOOL WALK OUT Friday April 20
GAG is going to confront some of the biggest donors to the NRA at their residential building starting at 6:00pm on 4/20. We're asking that you help us send the message that these New Yorkers do not share our values and therefore should not be afforded the luxury of anonymity. Human Beings and protesters are encouraged to attend. More info.
GAG AT THE GUN SHOW Saturday April 28
GAG will visit a gun show during the day. We'll meet at The Center (208 W 13th Street) around11:00am and head for Pennsylvania in a group of no more than 15 members. We always bring Human Beings to the gun shows, because it's a non-verbal way for the gun rights supporters who attend to make a connection between gun ownership and the toll that gun violence takes on our society. In many ways, the presence of the Human Beings may speak louder than the words we share with the people who attend these shows. Because the group is smaller, we typically only bring between one and three Human Beings with us. More info.
GAG is also looking for more social media support by identifying influencers who can help us engage with the public, particularly on Twitter.
GAG has affiliations in several cities however this initiative is being organized through the New York Chapter. Canadians wanting to participate are encouraged to volunteer or check out their Facebook page to connect with fellow Canucks who are heading down.
